‘Chance’

‘The Fairy Tale of the Frog King’
by Franz Stuck (1863 – 1928 German)

This card is about discovering the inner beauty in persons and things that may not be initially apparent. This also includes ourselves and what beautifies we may carry which are overlooked or under recognized. This whimsical card is also a bit about perseverance, taking a deeper look at things, and looking past our prejudices and preconceptions. It is also about the transformative power of love, as the princess kisses the frog, whereby beauty uncovers more and greater beauty, transformation. It also introduces and represents a mentality of ‘kissing frogs until one finds the prince’ which is representative of ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again’.

There are numerous other interpretations of the fairy tale of the princess and frog, from innocence and nurturing love, to accepting everyone regardless of looks, to relationship parallels, or how to be loved, one must first be loved, and similar descriptions. Finally this card indicates that things are often not what they seem, and with the princess’s kiss representing purity, and the frog’s appearance representing a curse of ugliness, all the while a greater reality lies hidden until the two do meet.
