‘Anam Cara’

‘Madonna of the Lilies (1905)’
by Alphonse Mucha (1860 – 1930 Czech)

Anam Cara is a celtic term meaning ‘Soul Friend’. It refers to either one’s greater self, or some person to whom you can confide anything and trust completely, without fear of judgement or ridicule. John O’Donohue talks at length about the Anam Cara, how it is a uniquely Celtic perspective, and the treasure it is.

May you meet
your Anam Cara,
your soul friend,
with whom you share
your sacred trust and love.

May you find
rest and refuge
in the presence
of her true and deep
respect and friendship.

May her truth be yours,
may her love be yours
may you find peace
and joy and gratefulness
in her warm embrace.
