Fairy Postcards by Florence Harrison (1858 – ? English)

‘Almost Fairy Time’
by Emma Florence Harrison (1858 – ? English)

Little is known about Emma Florence Harrison (1858 – ? English), often mistaken for her contemporary Florence Susan Harrison (1877 – 1955 Australian), another and better known fairy tale illustrator with a distinctively different style. What is known is that she studied at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1800’s, exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1877, and illustrated books of fairy verse (Blackie and Sons) and poetry (Rosetti and Tennyson). On a personal note, she was the oldest daughter of a well-off family, educated at a private school in Malvern and later studied at one of the London Art Colleges, and the only other records available indicate that at the age of 53 she was single and living with two of her sisters.

These postcards examples, signed with initials E.F.H. are from a set of six published by Vivian Mansell & Co Ltd of London. Her postcards are few and rare, but always a good addition to any fairy postcard collection.
