Air fairies are all about wings, flying and freedom, and the lightness of air. It is a strong elemental aspect to many fairies, as revealed by the name ‘f-air-y. Air fairies, classically known as sylphs, are a class of fairies including any fae with wings. If they can fly, they are air fairies, or at least have a strong presence of this element.

Air fairies, classically known as Sylphs, embody, reflect and express the dominant characteristics of the element air. The word ‘sylphs’ was first introduced by Paracelsus in the early 1500’s as part of his general description of fairies, with ‘Sylphs, corresponding to air’. Also of note, the term ‘sylph’ is derived from the Greek word silphe, which means a ‘butterfly’ or ‘moth’.
The classification of Sylphs include all the winged fairies, including garden fairies of all types, various sprites and pixies, valkyrie, angels, apsara, griffins, gargoyles, pegasusians and weather and wind fairies. The primary characteristic of air fairies is breath, the intake of air and prana within and outtake expressing all magic and creativity. They are primarily concerned with spiritual life, freedom, and purity, but also the intellect, and mental energies. They also have a lot to do with weather energies, particular air related phenomenon, such as whirlwinds, storm winds, breezes, gusts, gales, zephyrs, wafts and so forth.
When focusing on and working with the air element and its characteristics, the main values to recognize are freedom and unattachment. Air fairies are about movement, lightness and higher values, sailing on the winds, rising above the fray. Air fairies bring fresh air to one’s life, new opportunities and perspectives. They also emphasize mental energies, future dreaming, sharpened awareness and the releasing of that which binds. Air fairies also express spirit, from free spiritedness to sacred introspection, reminding one of our greater beingness beyond physical body. Tuning into air fairy energies creates positive thought, sparks creative ideas, and enhances intelligence and greater knowledge.
Air is the element between fire and water, the rising and transformative energy from fire becoming air, wind, breeze, gust and blow, and the eventual change to water, rain, mist, fog and drop, falling back to earth, as the cycle goes. Air magic is primarily about using breath to become present, to allow let go, freedom of flight, and nourishment of soul. With the taking in of breath, and following release, one’s health is benefited, both mental and physical. It is a light magic, gentle, easy, creating an environment for changes and evolution, ascension and uplift.
