The Earth Fairies

by Karl Mediz
(1868 – 1945 Austrian)
Earth fairies, classically known as Gnomes, embody, reflect and express the dominant characteristics of the element earth. The word ‘gnomes’ was first introduced by Paracelsus in the early 1500’s as part of his general description of fairies, with ‘Gnomes, corresponding to earth’.

by John Atkinson Grimshaw
(1836 – 1893 English)
The classification of Gnomes include those who work in human households, such as brownies and pixies, and those who live close to the earth, such as dwarfs, gnomes, elves, trolls, and knockers. It also includes nymphs in many natural environments, hilltops, mountains, forests, meadows and similar. Dryads are also included, being spirits of trees.
Gnomes are all about the earth and home, and the qualities of caretaking, belonging, growth, activity, work and the change in seasons. They are also about the internal qualities of grounding, introspection, health and retreat. Gnomes are about the tangible nature of earth, the texture of soil, the warmth of sunlight on leaves, the colors of all the seasons, interacting with the earth, from cleaning house to tilling land, to crafts of all kinds, to enjoying the pleasures of home. They are lovers of the material world and working within it, finding it nourishing, sensual and fulfilling.

(1882 – 1941 American)
Living with or working with gnomes differs with the different types of gnomes, or earth fairies. Household elves, brownies, pixies and the like love to caretake households, helping in many ways as suits their personalities and preferences. For them it is an act of devotion and their natural environment where they feel best; hence the caution to not over reward them if at all, as the work is a complete satisfaction itself and gifts confuse that sense of completion, which can annoy them. If they become a little pesky from time to time, moving things and so forth, well, then, such is the price, so to speak. Being quietly grateful is the best approach.
Encountering the other types of earth fairies, dwarfs, gnomes, elves, trolls, knockers and more, are more about live and let live, leaving them be to go about their ways as they inhabit and tend to the earth. They live close to the earth, unhurried, meditative, relaxed. Also they tend towards earthen beauty, raw, rich and sensuous, and don’t have wings since they have no interest in flying. They prefer their feet on the ground, standing next to the strength of a tree, feeling the coarse magic of rocks and minerals. They consider the whole earth their home, at ease everywhere there is undisturbed nature.

by Andreas Duncan Carse
(1876 – 1938 Scottish)
Earth fairy magic centers around nurturing, such as helping crops grow, preparing meals, crafting tools from raw metals, keeping one’s house tidy and so forth, in short all things in service to nature and home. In a word, earth magic is about work, which the earth fairies consider slow motion magic, which they can watch, rather than poof magic which is instantaneous. It is also about making work easy, effortless, finding it peaceful and rewarding, and end to itself. Earth fairies make effort seem easy due to the pace they live at, a slow practicality, a methodical approach, without hurry like when working around one’s house. It is also about sharing the experience of nature, sitting next to and sharing the energy of a tree with a dryad, standing in a meadow and watching Natura play with flowers and butterflies and plants waving in the wind, encountering nymphs in their many secluded places and being with their naturalness, gentleness and exotic beauty.
